Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, claims a title few cities can contest: one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth, with evidence of habitation possibly stretching back to the 5th millennium BC. At its heart rises the ancient Citadel of Erbil, a great occupied mound layered with millennia of successive settlement. The city appears in Sumerian records of the Third Dynasty of Ur as Urbilum and later passed through Assyrian and many other hands. Today it is the cultural and economic hub of Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Delhi Metro opened its first elevated stretch on the Red Line, from Shahdara to Tis Hazari, bringing rapid transit to India’s sprawling capital region. Famous for punctuality and cleanliness in a famously chaotic megacity, the system grew phase by phase into India’s largest and busiest metro, now spanning 10 colour-coded lines and over 270 stations across Delhi and its satellite cities. Its success became a template for metro construction across India, and the network today makes more than 4,300 trips a day carrying millions of passengers.

When cholera tore through London’s Soho district, killing more than 600 people around Broad Street, physician John Snow mapped the deaths and traced them to a single contaminated water pump, persuading authorities to remove its handle. His hypothesis that germ-contaminated water, not foul air or ‘miasma’, spread the disease challenged the medical orthodoxy of the day. The Broad Street investigation became a founding moment of modern epidemiology and helped drive the sanitation improvements that transformed public health in the second half of the 19th century.

The Beatles, then a five-piece of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best, began a residency in the clubs of Hamburg’s red-light district. Marathon sets night after night on the Reeperbahn hardened a raw Liverpool band into a ferocious live act, widened their reputation, and led to their first recording, which caught the attention of future manager Brian Epstein. The stint had its dramas, including George Harrison’s deportation for being underage. As Lennon later put it, the band grew up in Hamburg.

At the Battle of Hattin, fought beside the twin extinct volcanic peaks known as the Horns of Hattin near the Sea of Galilee, Sultan Saladin’s Ayyubid forces annihilated the army of the Crusader states. The vast majority of the Crusader forces were killed or captured, destroying their capacity to wage war. The victory made Muslim power pre-eminent in the Holy Land once more and opened the way for Saladin’s recapture of Jerusalem, defeats that prompted Europe to launch the Third Crusade two years later.
