North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, capital of South Vietnam, ending the Vietnam War. As tanks rolled toward the Presidential Palace, helicopters lifted evacuees from rooftops including the US embassy in a chaotic final airlift, an image that came to define the American defeat. President Duong Van Minh surrendered as the People’s Army completed its spring offensive. Thousands of civilians fled by sea and air, the first wave of a vast refugee exodus, and the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City ahead of formal reunification in 1976.

Momofuku Ando of Nissin Foods invented instant noodles, perfecting in a backyard shed in Osaka a method of flash-frying cooked noodles so they could be revived in minutes with boiling water. Launched as Chikin Ramen in postwar Japan, the precooked dried blocks with seasoning were initially a luxury but became one of the cheapest, most ubiquitous foods on Earth. Flash-frying still dominates production in Asia, and the Japanese public has repeatedly voted instant ramen among the country’s greatest inventions of the 20th century.

After a prolonged siege, the Mexica capital Tenochtitlan fell on 13 August 1521 to forces led by Hernán Cortés and a much larger coalition of Indigenous allies hostile to Aztec rule. Fighting, starvation, contaminated water and a devastating smallpox epidemic shattered the island city and its defenders. The last tlatoani, Cuauhtémoc, was captured while attempting to escape across the lake. The victory ended the central power of the Aztec Empire and enabled Spain to establish colonial rule in the region. Mexico City was subsequently built over the ruins of Tenochtitlan.

An earthquake toppled the Colossus of Rhodes, snapping the bronze giant at the knees barely 54 years after its completion. Erected in 280 BC by the sculptor Chares of Lindos to celebrate the island city’s successful defense against a Macedonian siege, the statue of the sun god Helios stood roughly 33 meters tall, about two-thirds the height of the Statue of Liberty, and ranked among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Even fallen, the vast fragments awed visitors for centuries before being sold for scrap.

The Yemen Arab Republic in the north and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen in the south formally united on May 22, 1990. Their leaders created the Republic of Yemen and agreed to a transitional power-sharing arrangement. The two states combined their governments, parliaments, armed forces, and economic systems over a planned transition. Ali Abdullah Saleh became head of the unified state.
