Colombia’s new constitution was promulgated on July 7, 1991. It replaced the 1886 charter and introduced stronger rights protections, judicial review, and new democratic institutions.

3. An army orders folding knives with a can-opener for every soldier

The Swiss Army began issuing a folding pocketknife to soldiers in the 1890s so they could open canned food and disassemble their service rifles. The first model was made in Germany, but Swiss cutlers soon took over production, including Karl Elsener’s company, later known as Victorinox. Its blade, screwdriver, can opener and awl folded into a compact handle. American soldiers popularized the English name after World War II, and red civilian versions with many added tools became an international symbol of Swiss design and versatility.

5. Two heavyweight rivals meet for a third, brutal time

Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier met for the third and final time at the Araneta Coliseum outside Manila, in the fight billed as the Thrilla in Manila. In sweltering heat, the two rivals battered each other through fourteen savage rounds for the undisputed heavyweight championship before Frazier’s trainer Eddie Futch stopped the fight, his fighter nearly blind. Ali, who won the trilogy two bouts to one, said afterward it was the closest thing to dying he knew. It is widely ranked among the greatest and most brutal fights in boxing history.
