US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met at Hofdi House in Reykjavik, Iceland, for a hastily arranged summit that became one of the Cold War’s most dramatic encounters. The two leaders edged astonishingly close to agreeing to eliminate their nuclear arsenals before talks collapsed at the last minute over Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative. Heinrich Schliemann began excavating Hisarlik in northwestern Anatolia in 1871, convinced that the mound concealed the Troy described in ancient Greek tradition. The site had already been identified and partly explored by Frank Calvert, whose advice helped direct Schliemann there. Digging revealed not one city but a succession of settlements built and rebuilt over thousands of years, now grouped into archaeological layers called Troy I through Troy IX. Schliemann’s destructive methods damaged parts of the mound, but the excavations established Hisarlik as the site of ancient Troy.

Kenya’s current constitution was promulgated on August 27, 2010, after voters approved it in a national referendum earlier that month.
