Tikal, likely known to its inhabitants as Yax Mutal, reached its apogee as one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya world. Rising from the rainforest of the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala, the city’s steep temple-pyramids still break above the jungle canopy, crowning an urban center whose monumental architecture dates back as far as the 4th century BC. Tikal warred and allied with rivals like Calakmul across the Classic Period before its decline and abandonment. The site, now a national park, was among UNESCO’s first World Heritage listings.

King Frederick VII signed Denmark’s first democratic constitution on June 5, 1849. The document ended absolute monarchy and established a constitutional system with an elected legislature. It also guaranteed a range of civil liberties and created a two-house parliament. June 5 is still observed as Constitution Day, although the present constitution is a revised version adopted in 1953.

Panama declared its separation from Colombia on November 3, 1903, after repeated political disputes and the devastation of the Thousand Days’ War. The United States quickly recognized the new republic and prevented Colombian forces from reasserting control across the isthmus. Soon afterward, the new government signed a treaty granting the United States extensive rights in a canal zone. Construction of the Panama Canal followed.

The Mozambique Liberation Front, known as FRELIMO, fought Portuguese colonial rule from 1964. The conflict continued until Portugal’s Carnation Revolution in 1974 transformed the political situation and opened negotiations. The Lusaka Accord arranged the transfer of power to FRELIMO. Mozambique proclaimed independence on June 25, 1975, with Samora Machel leading the new state.

Archaeologists tunneling beneath Temple 16 at the Maya city of Copán, near Honduras’s border with Guatemala, discovered Rosalila, a complete painted temple entombed intact under later construction phases. Rather than demolishing old temples, Copán’s rulers had carefully buried this one whole, preserving its stuccoed and painted facades in extraordinary condition. The find, made during tunneling work in 1989, offered an unmatched window into Classic Maya sacred architecture; a full-scale replica now anchors the site’s sculpture museum near the town of Copán Ruinas, gateway to the UNESCO-listed ruins.
