Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point, sixteen years after Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the international design competition for the site on Sydney Harbour. The gleaming white sail-like shells made it an instant icon and a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture, but the road there was bitter: cost overruns and political battles drove Utzon to resign mid-project and leave Australia, never to return to see his building finished. An Australian team led by Peter Hall completed the interiors of what is now a UNESCO-listed landmark.

British Guiana became independent on May 26, 1966, and adopted the name Guyana. Forbes Burnham served as prime minister as the new country entered the Commonwealth as a realm with the British monarch as head of state. Independence ended the colony’s long period of British rule. Guyana became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1970 while retaining its existing parliamentary institutions.

Geography clue given: It is the only English-speaking country on the South American mainland.

Voters in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia backed sovereignty in a referendum on 8 September 1991 as Yugoslavia was breaking apart. The republic declared independence without the fighting that accompanied the secessions of Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, although some ethnic Albanian voters boycotted the poll. It entered the United Nations in 1993 under the provisional reference ‘the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ because Greece disputed its name. The Prespa agreement settled that dispute, and the country officially became North Macedonia in 2019.

In South Pacific waters near Tofua, in what is now Tonga, disaffected crewmen led by Fletcher Christian seized HMS Bounty from Lieutenant William Bligh and cast him adrift with eighteen loyalists in the ship’s open launch. Bligh then pulled off one of history’s great feats of seamanship, navigating more than 3,500 nautical miles to safety. The mutineers scattered to Tahiti and remote Pitcairn Island, where their descendants live today. The Bounty had been collecting breadfruit in Tahiti, and the mutiny’s causes are still argued over two centuries later.

Jamaica’s 1944 constitution introduced universal adult suffrage, replacing voting qualifications based on property and income. The reform greatly expanded the electorate and allowed adult men and women to participate on equal terms. The first general election under the new system took place in December 1944. The Jamaica Labour Party won the election and formed the island’s first government chosen through universal suffrage.
