The Aswan High Dam was completed across the Nile after a decade of construction, an Egyptian national project built with Soviet help after Western financing collapsed. One of the world’s largest embankment dams, it tamed the Nile’s ancient flood cycle, stored water for irrigation, and generated electricity central to Egypt’s industrialization. Its reservoir, Lake Nasser, drowned historic Nubia and forced a celebrated UNESCO campaign to cut apart and relocate the colossal temples of Abu Simbel above the rising waters, along with the resettlement of tens of thousands of people.

The Obelisco de Buenos Aires shot up in just over nine weeks at the Plaza de la República, where Avenida Corrientes crosses the immense 9 de Julio, to mark the 400th anniversary of the city’s first founding. Designed by modernist architect Alberto Prebisch in reinforced concrete, the 67-meter spire was initially controversial but became the defining icon of the Argentine capital, the backdrop for World Cup celebrations, protests and everything in between. It remains the monument around which Buenos Aires gathers.

Copán flourished in western Honduras as the capital of a major Maya kingdom during the Classic period, especially from the fifth through ninth centuries. Its rulers filled the ceremonial center with temples, plazas, altars and elaborately carved stone stelae recording dynastic history. The Hieroglyphic Stairway contains the longest known Maya inscription, though collapsed blocks were partly reassembled before the script could be fully read. Copán developed a distinctive sculptural style and maintained written records across centuries. The city declined and its royal monuments ceased before it was largely abandoned in the early tenth century.

American primatologist Dian Fossey established the Karisoke Research Center high in Rwanda’s Virunga volcanoes, beginning the world’s most extensive study of mountain gorillas. Recruited by paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey as one of the ‘Trimates’ alongside Jane Goodall and Birute Galdikas, Fossey habituated wild gorilla groups and documented their lives daily for nearly two decades. Her book Gorillas in the Mist carried their plight to the world before her unsolved murder at her camp in 1985. Karisoke still operates, and the gorillas she fought for have edged back from extinction.

During the Golden Age of Piracy, privateers turned pirates made New Providence their principal Caribbean base. The loose confederacy followed informal shipboard codes, and many crews elected their captains and divided captured goods according to agreed rules. From the island, the pirates disrupted regional shipping and trade. Royal governor Woodes Rogers arrived in 1718, offered a pardon, and gradually restored British authority.
