The precise tap
Daily Map and PinDrop score your distance on a blank map.
MapTap gives you five places a day, a borderless globe and a this-day-in-history story behind each one. Once you have played today, these games scratch the same itch in different ways.

In 1453, this city became the capital of the Ottoman Empire after a pivotal siege.
Daily Map is the closest copy of MapTap, with five places on a 3D globe and the same weighted scoring. PinDrop adds city and sports editions. If you like the history stories most, try GeoHistory or HistoPin, which use written events as the clue, or Wherio, which asks which country each event happened in.
Start from the part of MapTap you would miss, and pick the game that does more of it.

There is no universal winner. Each pick below says who it suits and where another game on the list does the job better.
Daily Map plays almost exactly like MapTap: five named places, a 3D globe, later rounds worth more and a bonus for landing in the right country. It needs no sign-up, has no archive, and is the easiest second game for MapTap regulars.

GeoHistory says it was inspired by MapTap. Instead of a place name, each of its five daily questions is a written historical clue, and you tap where it happened. Later questions count more, and era rounds and the full archive are part of GeoGames Pro.

HistoPin takes MapTap's this-day-in-history idea and makes the event the puzzle: five events from today's date, each pinned on the map. Bonuses reward precision, speed and the right country. It is free with no ads.

PinDrop runs a global daily plus editions for cities such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and sports editions that ask where famous moments happened. Five rounds each, and a free account unlocks the archive.
Visit PinDrop (opens in a new tab)Wherio is our game. Like MapTap it is five rounds a day, but you start from a written historical event and tap the country where it happened. Neighbors earn at least 700 of 1,000 points, and each reveal explains the event.
Compared with Wherio: MapTap tells you the place and asks for a precise tap, then shows the story. Wherio gives you the story first and asks you to work out the country.

Globle colors each country you guess by how close it is to the mystery country, with no limit on guesses. It is a calmer, deduction-based way to use the same globe knowledge.

WhereTaken shows five street-level photos a day and asks for a pin. It swaps place names for visual detective work and keeps a free archive.

WhichWay asks you to aim a compass from one country toward the next. It uses the same globe intuition as MapTap from a completely different angle.
Visit WhichWay (opens in a new tab)Whenere asks you to pin three written events on a 3D globe and date each one. It is the hardest game here, for MapTap players who want the history to count.
Visit Whenere (opens in a new tab)FactMap asks five questions a day and tells you how precise to be for each, from an exact place to a whole country. It mixes history and geography trivia.

Without borders, coasts, big rivers and lakes are your landmarks. Learn their shapes first.
In MapTap, Daily Map and GeoHistory the last rounds count most. Slow down on rounds four and five.
In Wherio's own data, African and small-country answers are among the hardest. Those regions are worth extra practice for any map game.
MapTap's stories and Wherio's reveals turn a tap into a memory. Places you have a story for are places you will find again.
If the this-day-in-history story is your favorite part of MapTap, Wherio puts it first: read a real event, work out where it happened and tap the country.
