10 history map games that ask where it happened

A history map guesser gives you an event and a blank map, then measures how close you got. Some want the exact spot, some the country, and some the date as well. These are the best ones in 2026.

Daily puzzle
Round 3 of 5Use hint

In 1453, this city became the capital of the Ottoman Empire after a pivotal siege.

Confirm: 🇹🇷 Turkey

The short answer

If you want to read a historical event and find it on a map, play Wherio (pick the country), GeoHistory or FactMap (drop a pin), or HistoPin (pin this-day-in-history events). Whenere and Terra Tempus also ask for the date. TimeGuessr and Anthropeum do the same with photos and museum objects.

How precise do you want to be?

The biggest difference between history map games is what counts as a right answer.

Pick the country

Wherio scores the country you tap, with partial credit for neighbors.

Drop a pin

GeoHistory, FactMap and HistoPin score your distance in miles or kilometers.

Add the date

Whenere and Terra Tempus ask for the year, or even the day, as well.

This day in history

HistoPin and MapTap build their puzzles around today's date.

What each game does differently

There is no universal winner. Each pick below says who it suits and where another game on the list does the job better.

1. Wherio

Best for reading an event, finding the country

Wherio is our game, and this is exactly what it does. Each day you get five short written events, from prehistory to the present, and tap the country where each happened. Neighbors earn at least 700 of 1,000 points, and the reveal shows the date and explains the event.

2. GeoHistory

Best for pinning events precisely

By Rhino Studios, as part of its GeoGames app

GeoHistory gives five written clues a day and asks you to tap the spot on a globe. Scoring is by miles, with later questions worth more. It is part of the GeoGames app; era rounds and the full archive are part of GeoGames Pro.

Compared with Wherio: GeoHistory rewards a precise pin, often for a city. Wherio asks for the country, which keeps the focus on knowing the history.

3. HistoPin

Best for this day in history

By Kyle Allbright

HistoPin chooses five events from today's date and asks you to pin them. Bonuses reward precision, speed and landing in the right modern country. It is free with no ads, and practice mode filters by continent, era and category.

4. FactMap

Best for facts with a pin

FactMap asks five questions a day, such as where a famous figure died, and tells you how precise to be for each: a place, a city, a region or a country. That variety makes it a good bridge between pin and country games.

5. Whenere

Best for place and exact date

Whenere asks for a pin on a 3D globe and a date for each of three events, narrowing from century to day. It is demanding, and signed-in players get weekly themes, timed play and a flag mode.

6. Terra Tempus

Best for courses on us history

By Endpaper Labs

Terra Tempus pairs a pin with a year for each event, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Beyond the free daily, it offers endless play and guided courses on the Civil War and the American Revolution.

7. MapTap

Best for geography with a history story

By MapTap Inc

MapTap gives you place names rather than events, so it is a geography game first. But every place is tied to a this-day-in-history story you can read afterward, which is why many history fans play it daily.

8. TimeGuessr

Best for historical photos

By TimeGuessr Ltd

TimeGuessr is the photo version of a history map game: five historical images, each with a pin and a year. If you like reading visual clues more than text, start here.

9. Anthropeum

Best for ancient objects

By Matthew Chu, using open-access museum collections

Anthropeum shows museum artifacts and asks where they were made and when. It reaches far further back than photo games and is free.

10. Seterra

Best for studying historical borders

By GeoGuessr

Seterra is a quiz rather than a guessing game, but it includes historical maps such as the Roman Empire in 117 AD and Europe in 1444. Use it to learn the borders that make history map games easier.

How to get better at history map games

Placing history on a map is a skill. These habits come from watching tens of thousands of Wherio guesses.

1

Find the place in the clue

Clues often name a city, river or region. Locate that first, then decide which modern country it is in today.

2

Ignore the famous name

A clue about a Soviet cosmonaut can happen in Kazakhstan. In Wherio's data, clues like that are solved about 11 percentage points less often.

3

Practice Africa and small countries

Rounds answered by an African country or a small country are among Wherio's hardest. A little map study there goes a long way.

4

Guess the region when unsure

Distance scoring rewards being close. A guess in the right neighborhood beats a wild shot at the exact answer.

A history map game built around the country

Wherio is designed for people who know roughly where history happened but not the exact coordinates. Pick the country, see how close you were, then read what happened there.

How this guide was put together

Rachel Tublitz builds Wherio, so Wherio is on this list and marked as our game. Every other game was checked on its live site in October 2026 for format, cost, archive access and whether you need an account. The order reflects how well each game fits this particular search, not whether it competes with us.

Games change often. If something here is out of date, email hello@wherio.app and we will fix it.
